How to Store Your Boots   by Jenny Carson

A good pair of boots is certainly not a cheap investment. Most cowboy boots, such as Twisted-X boots, are more costly than normal shoes, thanks to the materials and the construction techniques used in making the product.

Boots play an important part of your feet's protection and for fashion. That's why they need to be well-cleaned and well-maintained. While regular cleaning and maintaining will surely prolong its life, a pair of boots also needs to be stored properly.

Here are some tips on how to properly store your boots so that you would extend its service and, at the same time, save space.

1) Boots are considerably larger than most of most other footwear. Therefore, you should first find a place where the boots can fit inside.

2) Choose a place where you can keep your boots within easy reach so you can just grab them and go. Mudrooms and entrance closets are preferable. The convenience of the storage place will also help you remember to put them back there after using the pair.

3) If you have more than one pair of boots, you need to categorize them according to the height of their shafts. Not only will your closet look organized, but also, you will also be able to match several boots at once very easily and quickly.

4) If your storage space has racks in it or if you decide to put them in a shoe rack, put your boots on the top level. This prevents the softer tops from being folded down. If the boots are stored with its boot shafts folded down, sooner or later, the shape will distort; and there goes your expensive boots. Your boots will have unsightly, wrinkled crease marks... a no-no in boot fashion.

5) Except for the ones with hard boot shafts, keep your boots stored upright. Most boot shafts, especially those made of softer leather or elastic material, tend to topple down.

To keep them in an upright position, you may try putting a rubber band around the shafts of each pair of boots. You may clip them if you don't have rubber bands. Whichever way, be careful to avoid making a crease mark.

A better way to keep the boot shaft upright is to try a boot tree. A boot tree is a device that looks like a wooden, plastic, or metal L with a movable joint. You insert the boot tree in side your boot, and the frame's shape serves as guide, keeping the shaft upright. The boot tree also prevents crease marks from developing.
6) Keep your boots away from direct sunlight. Sunlight makes the leather brittle and fades away the color of your boots. Always close the door of your storage place to prevent sunlight and dust from coming in.

7) Store your boots away from wet places. If water somehow drips in the storage space (due to leaks from above, for example), find another place to store your boots.

8) If you don't have a closet or storage space, you can store the boots in a large-enough crate or in the box where they were stored.
