Rainwater Collection - Is It Too Big For A Rain Collection Barrel

The reason why you're collecting rainwater is an important thing to know, in trying to determine how much storage capacity you will need. If you're only looking at collecting enough to water a small flower garden, then the average 50 gallon rainwater barrel will probably do just fine. If on the other hand you're trying to collect enough water to live independent of any other water source, you'll either need an awful lot of rain barrels, or you'll need a different kind of container. There have been many ideas fo collecting large quantities of water over the years ranging from creating a pond to collecting the water in large underground tanks. Recently I have noticed some very ingenious ideas for collecting large volumes of water in the magnitude of thousands of gallons .

In my opinion the most unique of these is the RainXchange. Now I'll be forced to put a video in here because this system is a bit difficult to describe in words. Essentially one digs a large rectangular hole with a very flat level bottom and place milk crate-like boxes in the hole and stack them to form a rectangular space which is wrapped in a waterproof wrapping except for some of the top area. Now you back fill the hole, and then cover the area with stones, flagstones, or some other porous covering, and create fountain or waterfall that will be powered by water pumped from the underground water storage area. The system is connected to your rainwater runoff collection system i.e. your downspout etc., creating a most unique rainwater collection system.

While the above is the most natural of these large collection systems, probably the most unique is The Original Rainwater pillow. They look a bit like a 750 gallon waterbed but they can get as big as 200,000 gallons. Generally this is put in a crawlspace under the porch or foundation, but I had an idea that you could build a box over it and decorate the platform in some way. We are essentially giving our Rainwater pillow a new home which I call a pillow pad.

Now one variation of the traditional rainwater barrel is a thin slimline plastic water tank designed to fit under the eaves of the house and fit snugly together for maximum water storage. Sally Dominguez's Rainwater HOG is one of the most recognized of these. The rectangular shape of these tanks allows them to fit tightly together, maximizing storage space and yet maintaining a neat appearance. If you are looking to do some rainwater harvesting you should get back to why so you can decide how. The most common fundamental reason is saving water for future use when it is scarce. However today rainwater runoff is a main contributor to the pollution of large bodies of water such as lakes and the oceans. Did you know that collecting the rainwater that comes off your roof can help prevent pollution?. Collecting all of the run off from your roof, however, would be the only way to accomplish this. Hence the 2000 gallon rainwater barrels

Just as an aside, realize, if you added a reverse osmosis water filter to your 'water barrel' system, it might just be possible
to live completely off the rainwater that came off your roof. Since this water would be free of chemicals and the rich in minerals it would be better for your lawn, and if purified it would even be better for you.Now the only purpose of this article was to get people thinking and getting new ideas. I hope you got some.
